The Nuisance That Is The Iguana In South Florida

iguana removal west palm beach

In case you hadn’t heard, iguanas are all but overrunning the Sunshine State. Whether it’s an iguana falling from trees or swimming in pools, they’re thriving because of South Florida’s subtropical climate and a lack of natural predators. And the human inhabitants do not want to share their warm-weather paradise with this destructive, invasive species.

By and large, green iguanas are herbivorous. They may eat insects or dead meat on occasion, but it’s fruits and leaves that make up the bulk of their diet. But to green iguanas, vegetation isn’t just a food source. This is a tree-loving animal that spends most of its time basking in forest canopies.

IGUANAS IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Green iguanas cause damage to residential and commercial landscape vegetation and are often considered a nuisance by property owners. Iguanas are attracted to trees with foliage or flowers, most fruits (except citrus) and almost any vegetable. Some green iguanas cause damage to infrastructure by digging burrows that erode and collapse sidewalks, foundations, seawalls, berms and canal banks. Green iguanas may also leave droppings on docks, moored boats, seawalls, porches, decks, pool platforms and inside swimming pools.

IGUANA CONTROL

Green iguanas are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty laws and can be humanely killed on private property year-round with landowner permission. The FWC encourages removal of green iguanas from private properties by landowners. Members of the public may also remove and humanely kill iguanas from 32 Commission-managed lands without a license or permit under Executive Order 23-16.

IGUANA REMOVAL IN WEST PALM BEACH

Iguanas recently contributed to some $1.8 million of damage in West Palm Beach, where their digging helped undermine a dam that controls water flow into the city’s reservoirs, according to the Palm Beach Post. The South Florida Water Management District has experienced similar problems among the multitude of manmade canals that line the Everglades and nearby areas.
