TV Show “The Big Bang Theory” has a scientific claim to fame

The hit CBS TV show “The Big Bang Theory” is about a group of brilliant but socially awkward scientists. In addition to playing a scientist on TV, lead character Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons, has a “real” claim to scientific fame. A scientist named a newly discovered bee species after the Bazinga! catch phrase made popular by Sheldon on the show. Sheldon uses the Bazinga! catch phrase to signal he’s just pulled a trick on somebody else – essentially a “gotcha” moment.

Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio said he named this new species of Brazilian orchid bee Euglossa Bazinga in honor of the TV show because the bee had tricked scientists for some time with its similarity to other species.

Steven Molaro, one of the executive producers of “The Big Bang Theory” said on Wednesday that the CBS comedy is “always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show.”
