Spring Prep for Mosquito Season

Mosquitoes are prevented from entering a window by a screen.

There’s a buzz going around that warm weather is making a comeback—and so are mosquitoes. Around this time of year, running into one (or hundreds) of them is nearly inevitable. Though it may seem like just an itchy nuisance, these little pests can spell a big problem for your outdoor activities and even your health.  As we approach spring, we're keeping you in the loop on everything you need to know about prep and prevention this mosquito season.

A Prevalent Pest

Dozens of mosquitos skim the surface of a still body of water.

The Sunshine State is also home to over 80 different species of mosquitoes, which emerge once the temperature is consistently above 50°F. Depending on where you live in Florida, this can be as early as February. The time they are most active varies by species, but most species tend to peak in activity around dusk.  While mosquitoes are nearly everywhere outdoors during the spring and summer, you’re more likely to encounter them in certain areas. Some of these pest hotspots include:

  • Areas with warm, standing water like swamps, rivers, and marshes
  • Coastal areas and shorelines (including lakes, ponds, and beaches)
  • Woods
  • Rural areas
  • Dark, undisturbed spots in your home, like attics and garages

Health Hazard

A mosquito bites a person.

Mosquitoes bring more than just an annoying buzz in your ear- they can also carry dangerous diseases that spread through bites.

Some of these include:

  • Zika virus
  • West Nile virus
  • Eastern equine encephalitis
  • Dengue fever
  • Yellow fever

Most mosquito-borne illness cases are reported in the southeast, especially in Florida. These diseases can cause symptoms like fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rashes, swollen lymph nodes, confusion, seizures, and even death. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so your best bet is beating the bite with mosquito prevention tactics.

Prep and Prevention at Home

Eradicating mosquitoes on your own may be a challenge, but there are several ways you can prevent or reduce them at home:

  • Check for and drain any standing water. These are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
  • Clean gutters and remove damp leaves—these pests are attracted to moist environments.
  • Use screens on windows and doors. Keeping doors closed also keeps bugs out.
  • Mosquito repellents to prevent bites.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants.
