IPM: Handling Multiple Pests In Your Business

It sure would be nice if pests agreed to come around one at a time. For example, termites would stay away because there already were mosquitoes in the area around your business, and the hornets would buzz away because the ants got there first. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way in real life, especially in Florida where a wide range of pests appreciate the climate.

Common Pests in Florida

Pests that may be causing problems in or around your business can include:

Is this a comprehensive list? Unfortunately not.

Why Pests Love Florida

Pests appreciate the warm temperatures in Florida, which allows them to continue growing their colonies without interruption. In places where temperatures can go below freezing for periods of time, the pests might die or at least go into hibernation. In Florida, that doesn’t happen as often.

Many pests also appreciate Florida’s humidity, including those that like to chomp on damp wood. Humidity provides a source of water for the pests, and some appreciate standing water as breeding grounds.

Here’s another reason why Florida can be a haven for pests: people. When you add up the number of residents who live here, year-round, plus those who live in Florida part of the year—and all of the business travelers, convention attendees, tourists and more—this means that there is more food available for them to enjoy in trash cans and more.

Integrated Pest Management Strategies

Integrated pest management, or IPM, is a process you can use to solve pest problems while minimizing risks to people and the environment. IPM can be used to manage all kinds of pests anywhere–in urban, agricultural, and wildland or natural areas.” (University of California)

Turner Pest Control offers integrated pest management (IPM) services, a modern approach for companies like yours. IPM provides highly effective pest control solutions for a broad range of pests in an environmentally sensitive way. This commonsense practice reduces the use of unnecessary chemicals while keeping your business pest-free, a safe place for employees and visitors alike.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides a detailed document on the benefits of IPM, using schools as an example. They call IPM a “Smart, Sensible and Sustainable approach to pest control.” Here’s why:

  • Smart: Pests are managed in a way that allows for a safer, healthier environment, while reducing exposure to pests—and also to pesticides.
  • Sensible: Strategies used are practical, and can reduce pests’ ability to get food, water, or shelter inside buildings and on the surrounding grounds.
  • Sustainable: Prevention is emphasized, which makes good economic sense.

The EPA also notes how the IPM approach can “enable a community to prevent or significantly reduce pollution from unnecessary pesticide use.”

Turner Pest Control and the IPM Approach

As step one in IPM, we carefully inspect a client’s buildings to look for ways that structural or sanitation-related improvements can help to prevent the entry of pests, and/or their survival. Using this knowledge, we recommend those improvements and then apply pesticides, as needed, through calibrated backpacks to ensure equal distribution of pesticides for the best control. Our pesticides are the most modern, longer lasting and tailored for the intense UV rays and rainfall that Florida experiences.

Then, at each service visit at a client’s location, we perform the same careful inspection that we did the first time, always looking for incremental improvements to proactively prevent a pest’s ability to enter or live in a building.
