Why itsy bitsy creatures strike ginormous fear into us

How and why to get rid of spiders

Spiders are unquestionably one of the most feared creatures on the planet. Arachnophobia affects approximately 55 percent of women and 18 percent of men in the Western World, which is a significant impact for such a small creature. It comes as no surprise that many people want to have them removed from their property.  Yet, as frustrating as spiders are, they do play an important role in our world and by ridding ourselves of them, we actually invite larger populations of other insects into our lives.

Spiders weave their sticky webs around rid us of many pests we’d prefer to live without. This is why treating for spiders alone can be a bad idea. The best solution is to find a comprehensive pest treatment plan that will take care of the entire insect food chain—including spiders, flies, snakes and any other unwanted guests that interfere with our quality of life.

Along came a spider

Most people follow a simple rule when determining how dangerous a spider is: The bigger it is, the scarier it is. In terms of poisonous spiders however, this approach is not always accurate. Around the world there are more than 40,000 types of spiders.  In the United States, there have been more than 3,000 types of spiders identified. There are some large spiders that prefer to stay far away from humans and linger in trees waiting for their unsuspecting prey. Then there are other spiders that while small, contain enough toxicity to cause even a grown man serious pain.

In Florida, there are two primary types of dangerous spiders:

  • The Widow Spider: These spiders are native to Florida. The females are larger than the males and are generally the dangerous ones. These spiders are black and often have a larger middle section that is shiny with red dots.
  • The Brown Recluse: Another small spider, the recluse is poisonous enough to cause pain to just about anyone, and can even be fatal in certain circumstances. These spiders are light-brown in color and generally have long legs.
