Though no human cases of the West Nile Virus have been reported in Florida for the 2013 season, the virus has already been detected in animals in the state. Since 2012 was one of the most severe West Nile Virus seasons on record, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and pest control professionals are watching the developments closely.
In 2012, the CDC reported 5,387 human cases of West Nile Virus, 243 of which were fatal. This reflects one of the biggest outbreaks of the virus in the U.S. and the deadliest year on record.
“The West Nile Virus season of 2012 was one for the record books and it has put a lot of people on alert to heed the warnings about adequate mosquito prevention in the future,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, infectious disease specialist and NPMA’s medical spokesperson.
“The unprecedented West Nile Virus epidemic of 2012 and the alarming amount of fatalities are worrisome for health and pest experts alike. Our members have received increased calls from homeowners to assist them with mosquito elimination in their back yards,” said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs at NPMA.
The good news is, there are steps you can take to help protect yourself and your family.
- Eliminate breeding grounds – Mosquitoes only need about ½ inch of water to breed. Eliminating areas of standing water around the home such as flowerpots, birdbaths and baby pools can greatly reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area.
- Be aware of the time of day – Between dawn and dusk is peak activity time for mosquitoes. Minimize outside activity during those times to prevent mosquito bites.
- Watch what you wear – Mosquitoes are attracted to specific characteristics of clothing such as dark colors and floral prints. Avoid wearing sweet-smelling perfumes and colognes, which could also attract mosquitoes to you.
- Protect your house – Screen windows and doors, and repair tears in existing screens to prevent mosquitoes from flying inside.
